487 inguinal herniorrnaphies were clinically analyzed, which were performed at the Dept. of General Surgery, Chungnam National University Hospital during the past 10 years from March 1985 to Feb.
@ES 1995 and the results wee as follows
@EN 1) The incidence of inguinal hernia was 6.5% of total operative cases operated during the same period.
2) Male as predominated over female by the ratio of 5.4:1.
3) As to the age distribution, 18.9% were under one year old, and 57.3% were under 5 years old.
4) As to the duration of disease, 22.6% wee under one month and 70.9% were under 12 months.
5) 55.0% of cases were on the right side, 35.7% on the left, and 9.3% bilaterally; the ratio of right to left being 1.5:1.
6) The most frequent type was indirect hernia (95.3%), followed by direct hernia (2.1%), pantaloon hernia(1.8%), and femoral hernia(0.8%).
7) The most frequent symptom was inguinal mass(76.6%), followed by scrotal swelling (230.0%), and abdominal pain(2.5%).
8) 10.7% of cases were incarcerated, and 0.2% was strangulated. 7.0% of cases were combined with hydrocele, and 3.1% with cryptorchidism.
9) 96.3% of cases were operated electively, and only 3.7% in emergency.
10) 84.6% of operations were undertaken under general anesthesia, 13.8% under epidural, and 1.6% under spinal anesthesia.
11) 57.3% of cases were repaired by high ligation, 24.4% by Bassini method, and 6.8% by McVay method.
12) Other operations were undertaken concomittantly in 14.8% of cases, among which hydrocelectomy was most frequent(7.0%).
13) The most frequent content of hernias was omentum(8.0%), followed by small bowel (3.1%).
14) The incidence of postoperative complication was 9.0%, among which urinary retention (3.1%) was most frequent, followed by wound seroma(1.6%) and scrotal edema(1.4%).
15) 66.3% of patients were discharged within 3rd postoperative day.
16) Recurrent hernias were 3.1% of all cases, but during follow-up period, there was no recurrent case who was operated in our clinic.
17) The incidence of hernias which developed on the contralateral side after hernia repair was 2.3% of all cases.
